Chapter 13

The Nymphs and the Humans met again at the spring, or the waterfall as the Nymphs referred to it. Being much smaller it would seem to be a waterfall from their point of view. This time Solon and Sophia accompanied Levi and Kassandra, and Alexis came along with Zandra and Philo. As they didn’t really have a name for their own people other than individual tribe names (they usually used the name of the tribe leader, such as ‘The Alexis tribe’) they were fine with Mankind’s name of ‘Nymph’ for their species et al.

Our tribe is alright with the idea of an allegiance, The Nymphs expressed, as are other tribes, but conditionally; they want to see how it works out with us first. Have you talked with other Man villages? No? Well, we can understand, without being able to actually share thoughts and experiences as we can it would be difficult to convince them that their youngling’s ‘bedtime stories’ are in fact about a real people. Alexis continued, answering the questions as they were conceived. Sure, if the alliance works with us you would be more than welcome to let others know. Our tribes are not limited to this valley either. We do need to arrange a place for our peoples to meet though, your village is too far and the jungles – ‘woods’ are too risky for us to make the journey alone.

Why not here? Solon considered the idea, then rejected it. Yes, it would be convenient for both, but this area isn’t really large enough for our entire village, We are a little larger than you are, after all, both in size and number. He chuckled. Is there another place your people could safely reach? Your harvest fields – oh, the rocky meadow! Yes, that would certainly work. The others agreed on this Tomorrow afternoon? Yes, those of us who would like to attempt to…what did you just say? ‘Bond’? I understand the word, but you’re not talking about a simple pairing up such as of mates, I can sense that as well. The concept carries with it the suggestion of something much more, significant. Sophia noted.

Well, I guess now is as good a time as any to see if it will even work. the Nymphs thought together. Alexis tried to convey the idea of what a Bond was to the humans. Yes, it was a type of link, but not just the simple sharing of thoughts and emotions as they were doing now, it was more, much more. However even with mindspeak the lack of anything like a common experience left the actual concept beyond their understanding.

Then Kassi asked how it worked, how did Nymphs ‘Bond’? And Alexis explained. Because of their ability to sense and understand the mind of others, she explained, two Nymphs know innately if they were completely compatible with each other, on a level so absolute that there would be almost no friction between them. And if both desire (and if the match is true they usually do) they may choose to Bond with each other. This Bond is much more intimate than the link you are experiencing now; both of the Bonded pair are always aware of the other. Then she directed her thoughts towards the two teens. I know it is difficult to understand, but if you are willing, Philo and Zandra have already determined that you, Kassandra, and Levi are compatible enough with them that they believe a Bond between you would be good.

Then the tone of Alexis' thoughts acquired a tone of seriousness that was almost dark. But you and Levi must also agree. Also I must warn you, although you have linked with them, Humans are not as psychically sensitive, so your knowledge of their personality is not as complete as theirs is of yours. And we as yet do not even know if a Human-Nymph bond would be as complete, if indeed it is even possible. You should also know that, if successful, it is also permanent; you will be Bonded for the rest of your life. Once it has been made a Bond cannot be unmade, only death can sever it!

Zandra and Philo looked to Levi and Kassandra. You must want this, completely. they reinforced Alexis’ warning. If you agree, then we can try. We give no guarantees it will work though, it has never been tried with your people.

Levi and Kassandra looked at each other with a smile that implied that they could mindspeak with each other, without the Nymphs. Willing? Agree? To something even better than they have now? Who wouldn’t! They looked back at Zandra and Philo to express their assent, but the two Nymphs had already felt their enthusiasm.

OK then, here we go, just relax and accept it…

The humans walked back to their village, but Alexis returned to her tribe alone. Zandra and Philo were once again perched upon the shoulders of Levi and Kassandra. But this time it was different, oh so very very different. Both teenagers virtually floated, their feet barely touching the ground. Or so it seemed to them, at least. The rest of the people of their village were in for something wondrous beyond anything they could ever even conceive!

When they got back, even without any mental contact the rest of the villagers could see that something very special had happened to them.

Once a village meeting had been called and the idea discussed most agreed to meet with the Nymphs in the meadow at the Slab. It had to be explained (with the help of Zandra and Philo) that actual Bonds would only be formed between those Human-Nymph pairs that were found to be completely compatible, so not everyone would end up actually 'Bonded' with a Nymph. But every Nymph would be willing to stay with the person he or she found the most agreeable, so all the Nymphs from Alexis' tribe would be paired with a human counterpart.

We understand that there are more humans than Nymphs, so not everyone will end up with a Nymph, even when it was limited to only their village. The humans told the Nymphs. Who replied, however there were other Nymph tribes in this valley, so if it worked out with Alexis’ tribe, there could be other chances to pair up with one in the future. This only served to make the possibility even more special, however fleeting it may be.

And they don’t even know what they’re in for yet! Levi laughed inside. And Zandra was glad to share in his almost childlike glee; it made her feel young again as well. In fact she felt better than she had since that fateful day that she had lost Eros. Levi gave her a warm feeling of sympathy for her lost mate.

Since Nymphs refrained from forming Bonds until they were at least adolescents, it was decided that Humans too should follow that tradition. So only those who were of their teen years or older would be allowed to go to the meeting in the meadow. The younglings initially didn’t like that idea very much, but they were placated when they learned that the Nymphs would still be able to link and ‘talk’ with them. Especially as it was the nymphs themselves that told them this, much to their astonishment and utter glee, having never experienced mindspeak for themselves yet.

The elders also declined to participate; “It wouldn’t feel right” they explained, to Zandra and Philo particularly. “Since, you say this ‘Bond’ is so intimate, and we have so few years left in the world it wouldn't be fair to the Nymph. Let those with a full life ahead of them be the ones.” The Nymphs nodded their understanding. “Besides,” Their speaker continued “This link alone is more than sufficiently amazing for us, we deem it pleasure enough to be able to have experienced it before ‘Gaia takes us back’.”

So it was agreed, and they had a small feast to celebrate the initiation of their new allegiance. Since Zandra and Philo were there in more social surroundings this time they were able to converse with each of the villagers in turn, and each in turn got a taste of what it was like to actually share their mind with those of another.

Tomorrow, however, mankind’s existence would be fundamentally changed. Forever!

Chapter 14

The Villagers who had chosen to meet the Nymphs walked through the woods toward the meadow, each wondering what they should be anticipating. Many of them had experienced mindspeak from either Philo, Zandra, or both by now, but through it they had also learned that this ‘Bond’ of theirs, that Levi and Kassi now shared with Zandra and Philo, was something different, more important somehow. And they all wondered in the back of their minds if any of them too would they be paired up in such a way with a Nymph? Would they be one of the ones to find one that would consider them as a match?

And whatever was it like? Despite their efforts neither of the Nymphs had been able to express the concept entirely, even with mindspeak. They did have the impression that many of the Nymphs, at least from Alexis’ tribe would choose to at least link with one of them, even if they weren’t sufficiently compatible for an actual Bond. But the mystery of exactly what this unexplainable Bonding could be was intriguing to many of them.

Levi and Kassandra knew exactly what it was, of course. They carried proudly upon their backs their newly Bonded Nymphs, both of whom had his or her legs wrapped around their Human’s necks, picka-back style. Each had their arms wrapped gently around the heads of their carriers, their own heads just barely above those of their Human. Even though it had only been a day, everyone could already see a distinct change in the two teens; both walked with a bounce to their stride that displayed a whole new zest for life that made the mystery even more tantalizing to the rest of the villagers. Levi had started to act with a greater maturity than seemed normal for his years; where once it seemed he showed nothing more than a childlike interest in someday becoming a great hunter, he was now much more balanced. And where Kassandra used to always be fawning over him, almost girlishly vying for his affections, instead she now walked beside him confidently. As if she knew she had finally won him, and that no one could ever take him away.

Daniel walked alongside his two friends at the head of the group. It had been unanimously decided as they had been the ones to have made first contact that they should lead them to this meeting as well. Once the diplomat…

Occasionally Daniel turned his head towards his friends. Whether he said anything or not indicated to anyone watching whether he was speaking to a Nymph or a Human. Of all the villagers, he seemed to be one of the few to adapt naturally to mindspeak, meaning he didn’t have to enunciate his thoughts verbally as he addressed mentally whatever Nymph he was speaking to. He simply thought it, silently. Inwardly he wondered how or even if this would affect how he ended up relating to the rest of the Nymphs.

They emerged from the woods and made their way through the waist high grass to an area that was too rocky to support plant growth. The solid slab of stone formed a clearing about 20 or so (human) paces across. There they waited for the Nymphs. Terrel and Prian, Kassi’s father, both proudly walked up alongside their kin and, standing beside them, hesitating for a moment, but the Nymphs let them know they didn’t mind. Smiling and sending warm thoughts they placed their hands on their children’s shoulders. Her mother hung back with the rest of the village, smiling at her family.

As unsure as the Humans were about the upcoming meeting, it was even more so for the Nymphs; most of whom had never even seen a Human before. Their only knowledge outside of their own legends came from what they had gotten from sharing the experiences of Zandra, Philo and to a lesser extent Alexis, as she had only met four of the humans: Levi, Kassandra, the village leader and his mate. They made their way across the grain fields, scattered so as not to disturb the grasses too much and betray their presence to any airborne predators. Like the Humans they too wondered about what this historic meeting would bring. Salvation for their race they hoped, of course. But what else would this allegiance begat?

Soon they reached the edge of the clearing and emerged from their grassy cover, gradually filling their section of the clearing. They saw the Humans speaking softly to each other as they did so. We must look even stranger to them then they do to us, they thought. We have always known of their existence; but to them, we are nothing less than the realization of their childhood fantasies!

Alexis walked out on the rocky plain far enough so that her people could easily fill the space behind her. There, in front of the rest of the Humans stood not their leaders, but the two teens that had been first contacted. She could see that Philo and Zandra were seated upon their shoulders They exchanged silent greetings, and through them she learned that the two older adults standing next to them were in fact Levi’s and Kassandra’s parents. Looking up at the Humans, she suppressed the primitive fear of a crowd of people over four times her height, then sent out a general greeting that all could ‘hear’.

Daniel saw the Nymphs emerging from the grass which easily grew to twice their height. It wasn’t the first time he had seen them, of course. But seeing so many of them all in one place was still quite a sight. He found it brought home the solid reality that Nymphs were in fact an entire race of people, every bit real as his own were. They didn’t emerge as a group, he noticed, but instead they seemed to seep individually from their entire side of the field. One walked a ways out and stopped; all of the others, he noted, stopped so that they would be standing behind her. So he surmised her as being Alexis, their leader.

Then he heard her in his mind, introducing herself as Alexis, indeed being the leader of her tribe. She thanked them for meeting them, and that this union, they hoped, would prove to be as beneficial to us (humans) as it would be to them. Indeed, it could actually result in the very salvation of their race! Daniel’s eyebrows raised, he never knew this was such a serious matter! He had assumed that this was mainly because Levi had found them so they had decided now would be a good idea to get together. Or something simple like that.

Alexis then went on to tell the villagers that they soon would feel many minds and not to worry about this, that they would just be seeking to become familiar  and find out whom amongst you they found to be compatible. There was a pause in which Daniel somehow knew that the Nymphs were listening to the villager’s response. He too gave a feeling of agreement for the Nymphs to ‘hear’. Then gradually he felt a large presence, as if a lot of people were all watching him intently. Well I guess a lot of people are, he thought humorously, but it still felt a little bit eerie. Gradually though, the feeling diminished. Just when he expected it to vanish completely he realized there was still one, only one, and with it came a feeling of great interest.

The interest soon changed into one of friendliness, and Daniel knew that it had liked what it saw in him. No not it, her. Daniel was filled with a sense of both wonder and excitement. Was this what it was like for Levi, he wondered? Then she ‘spoke’ to him, although she didn’t use ‘words’. Instead he just - knew. What she saw in him she liked and she wanted to share it. No not just share it, be a part of it! Be a part of it? Then she opened her mind up to him and let him know her, and she wanted to know if he felt the same about her. After a moment Daniel realized he did like what he was being shown, very much; that she was everything he liked. Yes He let her know I do, I like you very much. What a great way to get to know someone, he thought to himself!

What happened to him then was simply beyond words, beyond belief! What had been a conversation between two alike but separate minds expanded and become something that went way beyond what now seemed to be just a simple sharing of thoughts and feelings. It became a sharing of being. Suddenly he was aware of her in a way that defied all reason! He realized he didn’t just feel a strong affinity for her, he felt as if he was her, and that she was now equally a part of him, and she knew it to be equally as desirable! They were no longer two people sharing their minds, to his utter amazement and elation they had become two people sharing the same mind! He was her and she was him and both were each other. He suddenly realized he was crying. Tears of absolute joy streamed from his eyes as he knelt down and slowly extended his hand to this newfound part of him. As he arose with her safely seated within his palm he looked at Levi/Zandra and Kassi/Philo, and somehow, despite the blurring of his eyes saw the understanding smiles on his childhood friends’ faces. And he finally realized that he knew what the four of them really had.

And that from now until the day they died they were what he and Alexis had now become!

Chapter 15

The Nymphs of Alexis' tribe found Humans to be an easy people to get along with. All 17 of the remaining eligible Nymphs within it were able to find a Human they deemed acceptable to pair up with. That’s not counting Levi/Zandra and Kassandra/Philo, who were already Bonded. Of that seventeen, nine of them, including Daniel/Alexis, formed actual Bonds. None of the Nymph families were broken up; this was not just as a matter of courtesy, but as a byproduct of their compatibility: It turned out that if two Nymphs were a good match for each other, then the same would be true for the Humans that they preferred. As a perfect example of this, one pair of Nymphs, Leon and Irene, who were already Bonded to each other both found Humans they desired to Bond with; Solon and Sophia, who were themselves already very happily mated!

As the matching up continued Daniel found himself tearing up again and again. Every time he saw that unmistakable look of elation whenever a villager experienced this ultimate melding of minds, of two people becoming one, he found himself once again reliving that incredible experience.

Kassandra wondered if it was like this amongst Nymphs as well. A Bonding is certainly a joyous event, Philo let his soul-mate know But the emotional response is nowhere near as intense with us. Perhaps your people react so more strongly because you didn’t grow up with it. A Nymph is bonded to their parents from birth, so it already has experienced the intimacy of a Bond. Whereas this is a first time experience for you.

What happens if a Nymph finds more than one other that they are compatible with? Can they Bond with more than one? Kassandra 'asked'.

Yes, and no. We stay bonded to our parents our entire life, even after finding a mate of our own. However once one has found and Bonded to their Life Mate, neither wishes to find another. So the issue of Bonding with more than one other Nymph has never come up. Philo gave her a mental 'shrug' Now if one of the pair has returned to Gaia, that is died, then the other may Bond with someone else. Assuming they find another and both so desire, naturally.

Who is this ‘Gaia’ you keep referring to? Daniel wanted to know. I don’t mean to be rude, please understand. But I’ve ‘heard’ your people mention her a few times now. He could still ‘hear’ Philo a little, even though he noticed the thoughts of Kassi’s and Levi’s Nymphs had gradually become fainter as their individual Bonds matured. He suspected the same held true for them as well. Perhaps as their minds became more in tune with their partner their personal thoughts also became more private as well?

Gaia is everything – the world and all that exists within it. Both Philo and Zandra replied in unison, as if reciting something long known. Everything both living and inert, all that makes up what we are came from her, and someday will return again to her to be used in some other form. Perhaps to live again, perhaps just to be. And yes, your assumption is correct, Daniel; our thoughts will become less public as our Bonds grow. At least that’s the way it has always been with us.

Daniel heard and understood. Knowing even as he learned. Such was the way with the sharing of minds.

The advantages of direct mind to mind communication proved to be even more a boon to hunting than originally thought. Nor did it take long for them to adapt to this newfound ability either. No longer did they need hunt in teams so when they came across game they would be able to mount an ambush or attack. Instead they could now fan out in smaller, coordinated groups and scout a large area, increasing the chances of finding prey, using mindspeak with deadly results. It also allowed them to select which game sighting was the best to pursue, as all knew what the prey was, how many were where and when at any given time.

As such their very first hunting parties were able to bring in four beasts in a single morning’s hunt where they used to score only one, or two if they were lucky. After spending the rest of the day preparing the animals, salting and hanging the extra meat to dry, dressing the hides, bones and the rest of the useful parts of the beasts they had a feast unlike anything they had seen for as long as any could remember clearly. More food at one sitting than a Nymph usually sees their entire life.

Everyone celebrated the Nymphs, and the bounty that their deciding to come out of hiding and join up with the villagers had resulted in. And at least one benefit that the Humans had not even considered; Two of the villagers who had successfully Bonded with Nymphs announced they were planning to marry. Both had been friends, and had been considered courting. However once they had Bonded with their Nymphs they decided to forgo the formal and long tradition of finding out whether they were really made for each other and to trust their new partners word on it that they were, based on their partner’s intimate knowledge of them instead.

Seeing as they were now a part of the Human village, Alexis decided it was best to abandon her title as tribe leader. However Solon/Irene and Sophia/Leon all agreed that the Nymphs should also have a solid voice in the running of their new community. As such they decided that instead of a single leadership, that they would now govern the village by a council composed of both Human and Nymph. Seeing as Alexis was originally the Nymphs’ tribe leader it was decided that the Daniel/Alexis pair should be the first representatives of the Nymphs on this new council. After a little discussion on the matter it was decided that adding the Levi/Zandra pair as well would make for equal representation. This made for a council of eight: four Humans, four Nymphs. Their first decision was, once everyone was absolutely sure the new alliance was working to everyone’s satisfaction, that they should contact the neighboring villages in the valley and inform them of the Nymphs and what a marvelous gift they brought. Both Daniel and Alexis blushed at the compliment, both of them doing so simultaneously, of course.

Alexis had one last duty as tribe leader, however. That evening she reached out with her mind and located the other tribe leaders who were close enough for reliable mindspeak. Telling them that the joining up with the Humans was successful, and that the new alliance was, for now at least, working out very well for all; she sent along her experiences at the village feast to punctuate this. She would send more news as time went by and their new alliance evolved, but so far it looked very good. They responded that they will relay this news as far and wide as they could, and would be listening with great interest for further updates. To their knowledge at least two other tribes were currently studying a local village and that those Humans also looked promising.

Alexis ended the long distance link. I’m glad this is working out so well also, Daniel let his new partner in on his feelings. And even gladder that you had decided to let Zandra go ahead with this allegiance. But to be truthful, my joy is in part a little selfish. After all, it is what brought us together. He added sheepishly. And your decision has brought us Humans something marvelous beyond description.

He gently massaged the skin of his partner’s back, reveling at the fact that he could actually feel the pleasure his ministrations were giving his partner through their Bond, as if an invisible giant were rubbing his own back as well.

Alexis just moaned lazilly.

~ Epilogue ~

A few seasons had come and gone since the Nymphs and Humans had formed their allegiance. Although there had been a few rough spots between those who were merely linked, mainly because these pairings were not ideal (if they were they would have formed Bonds). But because they were still pretty well matched they were able to work out the small differences that had arisen without any difficulty. Just as human friends did between each other, albeit a lot more smoothly, due to the mental link which resulted in much greater understanding.

Also, The Nymphs had taken it upon themselves to learn the Human’s spoken language as well. When the Humans asked if they could learn ‘Nymph-ese’ also, the Nymphs responded they were welcome to if they wanted, but because Nymphs relied more on mindspeak, their spoken language wasn’t anywhere near as useful; thoughts were so much easier to express than words. After a while the humans realized they were right. Eventually, both predicted, the Nymph’s native tongue would probably die out: Human language was much fuller, which made sense considering they lacked the ability of expressing their thoughts any other way.

Since his Bonding with Zandra, and Kassandra’s with Philo, Levi had stopped ignoring Kassi’s advances, just as she had stopped chasing him. It seemed sorta stupid for both to continue doing so, as through their Nymphs they now both knew without a doubt that they were both perfect for each other. So why fight the inevitable? Despite their newfound maturity due to their connections with their partners, they held off any thoughts of courtship until they became of reasonable age. Out of fairness, Zandra and Philo also agreed to suspend any form of bond between themselves until their partners were themselves old enough to do so.

Ironically, Alex’s and Aly’s parents had not been selected by a Nymph pair. So the two younglings tended to spend most of their time with the other children whose parents had acquired Nymph families, and most of that was spent with the Nymph younglings. Some of the Humans had actually started speculating which of the child Nymphs would eventually end up linking, or possibly Bonding with Alex or Aly.

Through Alexis, the villagers learned that the nearest two Nymph tribes were satisfied that the Human/Nymph allegiance was working, and that the Human tribe near them did indeed seem suitable for them to ally with. But they thought that rather than simply attempt to reveal themselves to them ‘cold turkey’, that perhaps a representative pair could ‘break the ice’ first? After a bit of deliberation, it was decided that a better course would be to invite representatives of the other village to them, so they could witness first hand a Human/Nymph community. So a ‘Nymph-less’ messenger was sent and a meeting was set up “To discuss important matters regarding new hunting techniques.” A statement which most of the hunters thought was extremely funny.

Almost as funny as the looks on the faces of their neighboring villagers when they set eyes on a village that was almost half filled with people who stood no higher than their own knees. Needless to say Solon/Irene and Sophia/Leon had their complete attention. And when they took them on a hunt to demonstrate the ‘new hunting technique’ they were also noticeably impressed.

“All these years no one believed, or they thought I was just humoring the younglings. But it turned out I was right all along, wasn’t I?” She asked with a twinkle in her eyes. The smile on her face was gentle, not vindictive at all. Her name was Charis, but just about everyone referred to her the same way the younglings did; simply as ‘Grammy’. She was the oldest person in the village, and many of them had begun to think her mind was starting to slip away. She had clung to the belief that Nymphs were actually real people round the younglings for years, but lately it had seemed as if she was actually starting to believe that they actually were real, not just bedtime tales as everyone had thought. She never blamed them though “Without proof it is a difficult thing to verify, after all.”

Well, she certainly had her proof now, didn’t she?

“But how did you know? We assume you actually saw one, or perhaps even more.” Levi asked, absently stroking the bare back of his tiny partner, who was sitting quietly on his knee. “Your knowledge of them, which only now we know to have been uncannily accurate, is amazing, it’s like you’ve actually Bonded with them.”

A twinge of sadness crossed her face then. “Yes. I did actually know a Nymph, a long time ago, anyway. We never Bonded, obviously; we weren’t the necessary ‘peas in a pod’ close enough, personality wise. I was also way older than he was too.  But we did become good friends, and I would meet him in secret from time to time when I could get out and away.”

“So how come you didn’t initiate contact between our two peoples?” Kassandra asked. “You certainly had the opportunity. Certainly ‘your’ Nymph would have seen the same potential in you that were seen in me and Levi?”

“Oh, he did, and I wanted to, but he was scared. Not of us, you understand, but of what Alexis would say.” She told them. “She was even more adamant about keeping themselves hidden from us back then, you see.” Her head hung. “Then, last year he just stopped coming. I never knew what had happened until a while ago. It was when I ‘heard’ another Nymph talking to your Zandra, Levi. I guess she wasn’t being too private with her thoughts, or I don’t see how I could have heard her. But what she was expressing to Zandra hit me quite hard. It seems that he had died, and in a rather terrible accident too; although I was rather proud that he had done so in order to save Zandra’s life.”

Before she had even finished her story Levi ‘felt’ Zandra suddenly stiffen. And he realized exactly which Nymph it was whom Grammy had known! Grammy looked up, straight at Levi and motioned toward his little partner with a tear in her eye. “Did you know he was her Life-Mate? His name was Eros; I think in the Nymph’s tongue the name means ‘Love’. The name sure did fit him well didn’t it?”
